Medical Cannabis Frequently Asked Questions
What are the qualifying conditions for a medical cannabis card in Georgia?
Georgia has specific qualifying conditions for the Medical Cannabis Patient Registry. These currently include ALS, Alzheimer's disease, autism spectrum disorder, cancer, epidermolysis bullosa, hospice care, Stage III HIV, inflammatory bowel disease, intractable pain, lupus, mitochondrial disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, severe peripheral neuropathy, PTSD related to direct exposure to or witnessing of trauma in adults, seizure disorders related to epilepsy or traumatic head injury, sickle cell disease, and Tourette's syndrome. A patient must be evaluated and certified by a physician who determines that medical cannabis is appropriate.
Do I have to be a Georgia resident?
Yes. Adult patients must be Georgia residents and have a qualifying medical condition to be eligible for a Georgia Medical Cannabis Registry Card. Georgia requires proof of Georgia residency as part of the certification process.
How long does it take to receive my card after my evaluation appointment?
After your physician completes your certification, the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) verifies your information and sends you instructions to pay the $30 card fee. Once your payment is processed, DPH states that you should allow up to 10 business days to receive your card by UPS.
Will insurance cover my medical cannabis card evaluation or the medical cannabis?
Generally, no. Health insurance does not cover the Georgia Medical Cannabis Registry Card fee, and medical cannabis products are not covered by health insurance.
How long is a medical cannabis card good for?
A Georgia Medical Cannabis Registry Card is valid for five years. The expiration date is printed on the card.
How do I purchase medical cannabis with my card?
Once you have an active Georgia Medical Cannabis Card, you can purchase regulated medical cannabis products from a qualifying independent pharmacy such as Lee-King Pharmacy, or a licensed Georgia medical cannabis dispensary. When visiting Lee-King Pharmacy, bring your valid Medical Cannabis Card and a valid photo ID. Our knowledgeable team can help you understand the products available and answer questions about different formulations.
Can I drive after using medical cannabis?
Medical cannabis can affect your coordination, reaction time, judgment, and alertness. You should not drive or operate machinery if you feel impaired after using medical cannabis.
Having a legal medical cannabis card does not provide immunity from Georgia's impaired-driving laws. If you are new to a product or dose, consider using it for the first time when you do not need to drive so you can understand how it affects you.
Never drive if you feel impaired.
